Description

A filter press in drilling waste management uses pressure to separate solids from liquid, dewatering. The process substantially reduces the volume of waste for disposal, which saves costs and minimizes environmental impact.

How a filter press treats drilling waste
A complete filter press system for drilling waste involves multiple steps, which can include preliminary screening and chemical conditioning. 

  1. Sludge conditioning: Large particles are first screened out of the drilling waste. The remaining slurry is then mixed with flocculants in a conditioning tank. The flocculants cause the fine solid particles to clump together, which improves the efficiency of the filtration process.
  2. Feeding and dewatering: The conditioned slurry is pumped under high pressure into the filter press, where it fills the chambers formed by the filter plates. A filter cloth lining each plate retains the solid clumps, while the liquid (filtrate) passes through the cloth.
  3. Cake formation: As the solids accumulate, they form a solid filter cake within the chambers. Modern membrane filter presses can apply additional pressure to the cake by inflating a diaphragm, squeezing out more liquid for maximum dryness.
  4. Discharge: Once the dewatering cycle is complete, the plates of the press separate, and the dry filter cakes fall into a collection container or onto a conveyor system for final disposal.
  5. Water reuse: The recovered liquid, or filtrate, is significantly cleaner and can often be reused in drilling operations or safely discharged, reducing water consumption.
