Description
A linear motion shale shaker is a high-volume vibrating screen used in oil and gas drilling, mining and other industrial applications to separate large solids from drilling fluids. The machine uses a straight, back-and-forth vibration pattern to move materials across the screens, making it highly effective at conveying solids.

How it works
The primary purpose of a linear motion shale shaker is to efficiently separate larger particles, known as cuttings, from valuable drilling fluid, or "mud," so the fluid can be reused. This process is crucial for maintaining drilling efficiency and reducing operational costs.
  1. Vibrating motors: The shaker is powered by two counter-rotating vibrating motors that are mounted to the shaker basket.
  2. Linear vibration: The motors are positioned to produce a strong, linear (straight-line) motion across the entire screen deck. This aggressive, high-speed vibration forces the fluid and solids to separate as the material is propelled forward.
  3. Solid-liquid separation: As the drilling mud flows over the vibrating mesh screens, the linear motion helps the fluid pass through the screen openings while moving the larger solid particles toward the discharge end.
  4. Recycling: The cleaned fluid is collected in a trough below the screens and sent back into the mud system for recirculation down the wellbore. The separated solids are discharged as waste.
Key components
  • Vibrating motors: Generates the linear vibration necessary for separation. Some models feature adjustable settings for G-force and amplitude.
  • Screen deck: The screen-supporting frame is engineered to withstand high G-force vibrations. It often has an adjustable angle to optimize fluid processing and solids conveyance.
  • Shaker screens: These panels are the filtering elements made of high-strength wire mesh. They are available in various sizes and are designed for fast and easy replacement.
  • Weir or box feeder: A feeding system that ensures an even flow of drilling fluid onto the screens for consistent separation.
  • Collection trough: A basin located under the screens to collect the filtered drilling fluid for recirculation.
Advantages
  • High capacity: They can handle large volumes of drilling fluids, making them suitable for aggressive, high-rate drilling operations.
  • Effective solids conveyance: The linear motion efficiently moves dense, heavy solids across the screens and out of the shaker, leading to drier cuttings.
  • Versatility: Can be used in a wide range of drilling applications, including oil and gas, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and mining.
  • Reduced fluid loss: By effectively separating solids, linear motion shakers allow for the recovery and reuse of valuable drilling mud, which cuts down on costs and reduces waste.
