TBM rubber seal applications
TBM rubber seals are highly robust, large-diameter seals designed to protect the machinery of tunnel boring equipment from the harsh underground environment. Their applications include:
  • Main bearing protection: TBMs use massive radial lip seals, like the
    Walkersele TBMS
, to protect the main bearings behind the cutting head. These seals prevent the ingress of water, pressurized slurry, abrasive dust, and grit, ensuring the machine's reliability during long and challenging tunneling projects.
  • Launch and entry seals: When a TBM begins or ends a tunnel, start and entry seals are used to fill the gap between the machine's shield and the shaft wall. This is crucial for managing face pressure, preventing the inflow of water and grout, and ensuring safety.
  • Hydraulic cylinder sealing: TBMs use powerful hydraulic systems for steering, thrust, and tool manipulation. Specialized seals, such as rod seals and piston seals, are used to prevent fluid leaks and maintain the equipment's performance and safety.
  • Annular void sealing: As the TBM moves forward, it leaves an annular gap between the outer tunnel rings and the surrounding ground. Rubber sealing systems fill this void before the tunnel segments are grouted, preventing water ingress and managing face pressure.
  • Microtunneling: Smaller-scale TBMs, known as micro-TBMs, use specialized rubber seals to construct small-diameter tunnels, especially for projects that pass under roads, railways, or rivers.

Strip seal applications
Strip seals are flexible rubber or synthetic strips available in many shapes and sizes to fit a vast range of applications. Their primary function is to seal gaps, provide insulation, and act as a barrier against external elements.
Construction and building:
  • Weatherstripping: Used around windows and doors to prevent drafts, air leaks, and moisture infiltration. This improves a building's energy efficiency by reducing heating and cooling costs.
  • Garage door seals: Applied to the bottom and sides of garage doors to seal gaps and prevent pests, dust, and water from entering.
  • Shower and bathroom seals: Silicone strips are used to seal gaps in shower doors, bathtubs, and countertops to prevent water leaks and mold growth.
  • Cabinet and furniture seals: Used to seal cabinet doors and other furniture to keep out dust and provide cushioning to prevent impacts.
Automotive and transportation:
  • Car door and window seals: Installed around doors, windows, and trunks to seal the cabin against weather, reduce road noise, and improve insulation.
  • Rail vehicle seals: Seals on the doors and windows of trains prevent dust, water, and air pressure fluctuations from affecting the passenger cabin.
  • Container and marine seals: Large shipping containers, boats, and ships use strip seals to create airtight and watertight seals to protect cargo and interiors from harsh weather and sea conditions.
