A drilling fluid solids control mud cleaner is a compact, multi-stage piece of equipment that separates fine solids from drilling mud. It combines desander and desilter hydrocyclones with a fine-mesh shale shaker, offering a higher cleaning function than separate units. 
How a mud cleaner works
  1. Feed: After the drilling fluid has passed through the primary shale shakers, a centrifugal pump draws the mud from a holding tank and feeds it into the mud cleaner's hydrocyclones at a precise pressure.
  2. Hydrocyclone separation:
    • Desander cones (typically 8 to 10 inches) are the first stage of separation. They use centrifugal force to remove larger solid particles, generally in the 40 to 100 micron range.
    • Desilter cones (typically 4 inches) are the second stage. They remove finer solid particles, often in the 15 to 70 micron range.
  3. Shaker screen processing: The underflow from the hydrocyclones—the dense solids-laden slurry—is discharged onto a vibrating shaker screen. This screen performs a final separation, allowing valuable drilling fluids (often weighted mud) to pass through and be recovered, while the remaining solids are removed as waste. 
Mud Cleaner is the second class and the third class solids control equipment which is the newest type to treat the drilling fluid.
