A shield segment sealing strip, also known as a tunnel segment gasket or a tunnel segment seal (TSG), is a gasket made of EPDM or Neoprence material. The strip is installed in grooves around the precast concrete segments that form the tunnel lining, creating a watertight and airtight seal.
Application and installation
Tunnel segment gaskets are a critical component in infrastructure projects like subways, roads, and sewers. Proper installation is essential for a secure, long-lasting seal.
The standard installation procedure typically involves these steps:
- The gasket is either cast into the concrete segments or manually installed into a pre-cast groove using an adhesive.
- The corners of the gasket frame are positioned first.
- The remaining sections of the gasket are pressed evenly into the groove, starting from the middle of each side and working toward the corners.
- A visual inspection is performed to ensure the correct fit and positioning of the entire gasket.
- A lubricant may be applied to the gasket's surface just before the segments are installed to reduce friction and minimize the risk of pinching or movement.
- The segments are then joined, and the compressive force creates a tight, waterproof seal between the rubber gaskets.
